Provide each of your students with a tutor and a role model.

We are always looking for afterschool programs or other youth-serving organizations in need of in-person or online tutors. Contact josh_wolters@hotmail.com to receive tutors in less than a month.

How it Works

It’s Completely Free. We come to you.

Our tutors are all volunteers. Contact us and we will a find group of qualified high schoolers near your organization as soon as possible. Once trained, they will come to your organization and tutor the students there once a week or more. Our tutors can provide one-on-one tutoring, provide group tutoring, help with homework time, or help with non-academic activities. We can provide both general tutoring and subject-specific tutoring. We tutor online and virtually. There is absolutely no cost involved, it is completely free.

Our tutors are trained, screened, and monitored.

All of our tutors go through a three-step application process that includes an application, interview, and Washington State Background Check. We also require our tutors take a 2-hour training on how to tutor effectively and interact with students from diverse backgrounds. We will monitor our tutors regularly to make sure they are consistent and so we can tend to issue if they arise.

We adapt to your organization’s policies.

We will work with your organization to ensure our tutors fill out all required forms, pass required background checks, and comply with all of your organization’s policies. We understand the need for privacy, confidentiality, and boundaries when working with youth that have faced challenging circumstances. All of our tutors are trained to be thoughtful of such challenges, and we are willing to add specific content to our training if requested.

How to use our tutoring service — step by step:

  1. Reach out to josh_wolters@hotmail.com to request our services or hear more about our organization.

  2. We will set up a phone or in-person meeting as soon as you are ready to proceed or if you want to learn more. We will figure out how our services can best be adapted to suit your organization’s needs. We will determine how many tutors you need and what types of tutors you need (subject specific, general, virtual, in-person, etc.)

  3. Student Connection will begin recruiting, screening, and training a group of tutors at a high school that is located within 25 minutes of your organization’s location. Our tutors will be trained to tutor effectively and relate with students from diverse or challenging backgrounds. We can also include in our training the policies and material that your organization wishes for us to include, such as privacy policies or childcare recommendations.

  4. We will work with your organization to find the best way for our tutors to come into your organization. This may be as a tutor, a volunteer, or in some other capacity. We will work to make sure our tutors complete all paperwork, volunteer applications, background checks, and trainings that your organization requires.

  5. We will schedule times for our tutors to come tutor at your organization’s facility or video call with your students. We hope for our tutors to tutor once a week (or more) so they can build trust and adapt to your students’ learning styles. Our tutors can go beyond tutoring. They can ask your students if they have homework, encourage them to do their homework, help out with non-academic activities, and develop mentorship relationships with your students.

  6. We hope for our tutors to tutor for the entire school year. We will monitor our tutors via monthly surveys to make sure they are tutoring consistently and to tend to any issues that arise. We can bring back our tutors that are still in high school the next year and recruit more tutors to replace the ones who graduated.

Why Use Our Tutoring Service?

  • By connecting your students with our tutors, you can provide an extra layer of the academic support and a consistent academic role model. We cater to organizations that serve youth with disadvantaged backgrounds, including homeless shelters, transitional housing developments, and low-income after school care programs.

  • All of our current tutors have reported to develop mentorships with most of the students they have tutored. Having a mentor has many far reaching effects for at-risk youth. At-risk children with mentors are more likely to attend class, graduate, attend college, and stay out of jail. Our mentors are trained to be role models and to make the students they tutor know that they have potential and that they matter.

  • We want to help you support your students as best as possible. Having tutors around to help students with homework can help social workers and childcare workers look after youth while supporting them academically.

  • As an organization serving disadvantaged youth, it is likely that you are determined to effect real change in your community. You know best of all that every child should be given a chance to succeed. By providing your students tutors, you can increase their chances even more. With a tutor or mentor, a child is more likely to escape the cycle of poverty and overcome racial and social disparities. Partnering with Student Connection is a great way to supplement the valuable work you are already doing.
